The earliest voice recorder was the first time to record sound into a fixed medium. It was in 1860, 17 years before Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, the Paris typesetter and inventor Scott de Martinville invented the phonograph.
The voice recorder is a very complex and old mechanical device. Its basic principle is to put a layer of film on the end of the barrel made of anhydrite. Its vibration will trigger the iron pen below. The iron pen is pressed on the paper blackened by the oil lamp, and the paper is connected to a rotating cylinder. The sound wave will leave a mark on the rotating paper. Scott did record the sound, but he could not restore it back. He regarded the machine as an automatic dictation device, and people could read it through their eyes. These traces were "silent" for a century and a half.
